The Islands offer fantastic trekking for all abilities and levels of fitness, due to the varied terrain and spectacular scenery they are wonderful to explore on foot.

Some walks require previous hill walking experience, a high level of fitness and proper walking boots, for some walks guides are a necessity and can be arranged and paid for locally. Other routes are well signposted and therefore no guide is required.

From the larger islands there is the opportunity to explore some of the smaller less inhabited islands, many companies offer day trips to suit the most avid island hopper.

On Santo Antão walkers climb up and down through the ribeiras surrounded by deep gorges and steep peaks.

Fogo, with its volcanic origins has a crater route that ascends to Pico do Fogo which is 2829m high and there are many trails around the crater sides.

There are many beautiful walks on Santo Antão which are ideally started in the middle of the island and walkers then make their way to the coast, the hardest route here is climbing the Pico do Santo Antão which is a twin peak. Walking boots are a must and some routes will require a guide which can be organised locally.
